WIAW

Today I am sharing a day of eats and exercise at my grandma’s house in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I was staying with her for just under a week in February, for my cousin’s wedding. This is a woman who once told me, totally seriously, “I don’t like vegetables.” So let’s check out a day at her house…

Breakfast: raisin bran crunch cereal with milk and strawberries. Not too bad, actually, although I never eat cereal at home.

Coffee too, of course, with half and half at grandma’s instead of my regular almond milk. Half & half does taste a lot better actually! I was ironically catching up on my textbook reading for the nutrition class I’m taking now. One of our assignments was to track and analyze a day of eating, so I included all that information at the end of this post. Here’s what my breakfast looked like in terms of calories:

Exercise: yoga! I did sneak out to Core Power twice during my stay, but on this day my grandma was out with her car, so I rolled out my mat in her living room and did an hour of power.

Exercise: afterwards, I ran outside for just one mile, because it was so cold I couldn’t feel my toes and it was difficult to breathe. I will not be running outside in 10 degrees again!

Lunch: a small bag of Doritos and a sandwich with deli turkey, velveeta cheese, mayo, mustard, salt and pepper. There was no lettuce in the house, not surprisingly.

Dinner: grandma always wants us well-fed and is willing to cook for us, even at 84, which is very sweet. She made roast turkey thighs with stove top stuffing, packaged mashed potatoes and gravy, and broccoli (microwaved with butter). It did all taste really good, I will say, even though I would never dream of making food in this way at home.

Dessert: one (large) Godiva chocolate truffle. Grandma has a whole candy drawer! I was proud of myself for staying away from it (mostly) during my stay.

Not pictured: one Hershey’s kiss from the candy drawer, and a Gatorade. I was very surprised at the end of the day to see that I probably ate fewer calories than I burned off.

I was not surprised to see that I consumed WAY too much sodium (that’s what processed cheese and packaged dinner sides will do to you… guess I didn’t need that Gatorade!) and too much sugar (I’m guessing that was from the raisin bran).

But I was pleasantly surprised to see that my macro-nutrient breakdown was spot-on! What do you think? Doesn’t this day look a lot different from my regular WIAW posts?

What did you eat today?
